Newlisi: sewage sludge treatment and reduction

Among the sludge treatment processes available, the Newlisi solution stands out for its simplicity and effectiveness, enabling sludge to be reduced and recovered in a perfect circular economy synthesis.

The process consists of a two-phase (acid-alkaline) or one-phase (alkaline) oxidative thermochemical hydrolysis of the sludge, conducted at low temperature (not exceeding 85°C) and at atmospheric pressure. Compared to conventional hydrolysis without oxidation, the use of an oxidising agent promotes sludge breakdown and produces soluble compounds suitable for the anaerobic digestion process.

The end result is the reduction of the solid fraction, which when solubilised increases biogas production, makes the sludge more easily digestible and improves its dehydratability.

The Newlisi solution is applicable to any type of plant, whether or not equipped with an anaerobic digester, since it is available in two different versions.

The organic fraction is first solubilised in the acid and alkaline oxidative hydrolysis phases and is then converted into oligosaccharides, peptones and free amino acids, which are totally biodegradable. The first phases completely break down the organic and inorganic compounds, while the subsequent phases consist of sedimentation and neutralisation.

The use of an oxidiser yields better results for sludge disintegration and produces various soluble compounds, often dominated by a series of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) such as acetate, formate, propionate and valerate, which improve biogas production yield of the subsequent anaerobic digestion process.

The product of the conversion process is sent to the anaerobic digester or, in the absence of such directly to dehydration for solid/liquid separation section. The dehydrated sludge is sent to the top of the purification plant.

The process does not alter the possible usage of the sewage sludge but does make it more stable, sanitised and suitable for application in agriculture.

Newlisi Full

The solution can be applied to all purification plants

Input sludge with a 4-6% Total Suspended Solid (TSS) concentration

Heating of the sludge to a temperature of 80 – 85°C

Treatment in an acidic (strong acid) and oxidative condition

Static sedimentation

Alkaline phase treatment (soda or potash) with controlled dosing of an oxidiser

Output for the anaerobic digestion phase, if provided for, or directly to the dehydration section

The Newlisi Full solution can be applied to all purification plants, whether or not they are equipped with an anaerobic digestion compartment.

The treatment phase of the sewage sludge consists of an acid oxidative hydrolysis (HCl+H2O2) phase followed by an alkaline oxidative hydrolysis (NaOH+H2O2) phase at low temperature (< 85°C) and at atmospheric pressure. Compared to conventional hydrolysis without oxidation, the use of an oxidising agent enables different operating conditions to be achieved, with a substantial change in the oxidation-reduction potential: this results in a considerable improvement in process performance in terms of sewage sludge reduction.

The Newlisi Full solution therefore allows for a reduction of over 70% in sludge for disposal. The process also enables biogas production to be increased by more than 40% where anaerobic digestion of hydrolysed sludge is being carried out.

The Newlisi Light process involves the pre-treatment of sludge to maximise biogas production in the anaerobic digestion phase.

The sewage sludge pre-treatment phase consists of a single thermo-alkaline oxidative hydrolysis phase at low temperature (< 85°C) and at atmospheric pressure.

Newlisi Light enables a reduction of about 50% in sludge for disposal and an increase in biogas production of more than 40%.
